Message from the Dean

Kate KrauseWelcome to the Honors College at the University of New Mexico, a unique learning environment at the heart of New Mexico’s flagship university. The Honors College offers undergraduate students access to the amenities of a research university: state of the art labs, studios and facilities, the largest library in the state, faculty working at the frontiers of their fields, and hundreds of degree programs from which to choose. At the same time, the Honors College offers the benefits of a small community of scholars engaged in interdisciplinary, highly interactive seminars.

Honors students at the University of New Mexico can choose from among any of UNM’s majors or can design their own interdisciplinary Honors Major. Honors seminars are safe spaces in which students from different majors explore and question the limits of disciplinary boundaries while engaged in lively debates about some of the most pressing issues of our day. Our innovative and flexible curriculum encourages – requires! – students to expand their problem solving skills to include the methodologies, sources of knowledge, and perspectives of multiple academic traditions.

The outstanding faculty in the Honors College are dedicated to helping each student achieve his or her dreams. Unlike many honors programs and colleges, all UNM Honors faculty members’ primary academic appointments are in the Honors College, where they are focused exclusively on the interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching that defines and distinguishes us. You can meet them on these pages and learn more about their work and their research collaborations with Honors students.

Honors at UNM extends beyond the classroom. The Honors Research Institute and the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program support students engaged in faculty-mentored original research. International programs take Honors students out into the world. The Scholars Wing, the Honors Student Association, and our new Honors Houses create a rich social and co-curricular environment. The Center for Academic Excellence and Leadership Development mentors students as they prepare to compete for national and international scholarships and fellowships.

Honors at UNM is much more than a College. It’s a community, a philosophy, an academic home, and much more. As you learn more about us on these pages, perhaps you can imagine yourself – and your future - here. And if you would like to know more about us, please ask – or better yet, visit!

Welcome to the Honors College at UNM!

Kate Krause, Dean
