Ryan Swanson earned his Ph.D. in history from Georgetown University.  Before that he attended Point Loma Nazarene University and California State University, Fullerton.  His first book When Baseball Went White (2014) tells the story of how baseball became segregated.  His latest project deals with sports at the turn of the 20thcentury, a time when Americans began doing things like putting their children in sports leagues and attending the World Series.  Generally Ryan teaches and researches on sports, race and racism, and the 19th century in United States history.  He also directs the Lobo Scholars Program in conjunction with the UNM athletics department.  In his free time, Ryan enjoys spending time with wife and three children, exploring Albuquerque, and doing a bit of jogging and golfing.

Research Interests: role of sport in American society; the 19th century in US history; the role of race and racism; the intersection of higher education and athletics.
