Biodiversity of Australia
This research project was funded by the Honors College Research Institute (with generous support from Sonnet and Ian McKinnon) and a UNM Research Allocations Grant.
Professor Ursula Shepherd, five undergraduates, and a German colleague traveled to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia to study corals and other marine invertebrates in the summer of 2013. Their work examined important questions about the relationships of these invertebrates to their microbial symbionts. The work has important ramifications for the serious die-off and possible extinction of coral reefs worldwide. Students conducted fieldwork as well as lab work during this month long program, and at least two papers have been written, one accepted and one in submission with students as co-authors with the senior faculty.
