Students pile in a truck for tirp to the mountains.

Admissions

Incoming freshmen, current UNM students and transfer students must fill out an application, and submit unofficial transcripts. Students have the option of including a 1-page personal essay about themselves, their goals, and their interest in the UHP. Special consideration is given to essays which demonstrate community/academic involvement and strong writing abilities. Upon acceptance, students are invited to send a photograph which is retained in our database (we prefer to know you by your face, rather than your ID).

Students may request an application in the UHP office, by phone or fill out our pdf form and deliver or mail it to the UHP.

Qualifications Required to Enter the Honors Program

Incoming Freshperon Applicants:

  • Unofficial high school transcript with cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher; or
  • ACT cumulative test score of 29 (or higher) or SAT score of 1860 (or higher);
  • Minimum requirements: 3.4 GPA / 26 ACT / 1760 SAT with a personal essay

Transfer or current UNM Student Applicants:

  • Unofficial college/university transcript with cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher; and
  • Have completed English 101 or its equivalent

If you don't have the qualifications necessary:
Students with scores below the minimums are encouraged to defer their applications for one semester. As an entering freshperson, wait one semester, get a feel for the UNM course loads, apply in your second semester. You've got some time to consider the Program.

As a transfer or current student, you are encouraged to apply to the Program by the end of your sophomore year.

The Application

Applying to the UHP is easy. Just print out a copy of our two-page application (requires the free Adobe Acrobat Reader), attach a personal essay, return the completed packet to us, and you're done! Within 3-5 business days our office will send a decision to either the e-mail or mailing address provided on the application.

Application Deadlines

We accept applications year-round. However, we strongly prefer to receive applications by these deadlines: May 1 for Fall admission; November 1 for Spring admission.
