Giving to Honors
The University Honors Program is one of the premier undergraduate programs on the University of New Mexico campus. Annual gifts are vital to the success of this program. Funds help to strengthen our central mission, which is to provide challenging opportunities for intensive interdisciplinary and cross-cultural liberal education to highly motivated, talented, and creative undergraduates in all majors and all colleges, and to build a community of scholars. Private support ensures our ability to provide exceptional educational experiences to our students. We honor our donors with a Copper Leaf ($500-$999), a Silver Leaf ($1000-$4,999) and a Gold Leaf ($5000+) on the Alumni Giving Tree centrally displayed in our Forum.
What initiatives will my annual gift support?
Your gift to the University Honors Program Fund supports the new and ongoing needs of the Program. In addition, experiences of our Honors students are enriched as contributions enable us with the flexibility to do the following: 1.) Provide support for our regional arts and literary magazine, Scribendi 2.) Fund students travel for field study, international programs, national and regional conferences, and 3.) Hold topical lecture series and symposia.
Why should I make an annual gift?
Alumni and friends have highly varied and personal motivations for making annual gifts to the University Honors Program. Some graduates regard their contributions as an act of appreciation for what the Honors Program has given them. A gift to the Program means a great deal to the future: creating an environment where teaching and learning can flourish, and preparing graduates to be successful and productive members of society.
Alumni Honors Endowment
The Alumni Honors Endowment was established in 2004 with twenty-nine Charter Members. This is an unrestricted annual gift that gives us flexibility to respond to emerging as well as planned opportunities but also provides for future financial security. The Alumni Honors Endowment will support:
- Outstanding Honors alumni award, to be presented at the annual Honors Awards Ceremony each May
- Supplement the Carruthers Chair, the only chair in the program, which supports a scholar for one year. The supplemental funding can be crucial to the support of a first tier scholar;
- Stipends for students. Even good students occasionally run into unexpected costs;
- Honorariums for guest lecturers;
- Faculty and student conferences, seminar support, equipment and other facility needs;
- The newly established Honors Advisement Center run by Peer Advisors;
The needs are endless! For questions and additional information, please contact: Rosalie Otero, Director of the University Honors Program, at (505) 277-4211 or otero@unm.edu.
