About Sachi :
Minor: Music
Meet Sachi Barnaby, a senior at the University of New Mexico, whose interdisciplinary academic journey is as diverse and dynamic as her passions. Majoring in Computer Science, Honors Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, with a minor in Music, Sachi is at the intersection of technology, social justice, and the arts.
Sachi is currently co-teaching the Honors course Atomic Bomb Culture with Dr. Myrriah Gomez as part of her Senior Teaching Capstone. She is also collaborating with Dr. Gomez to prepare a two-day symposium focused on the bomb exhibit, a groundbreaking multimedia installation that immerses audiences in the complex and often unsettling reality of nuclear weapons. These unique opportunities have allowed Sachi to critically explore nuclear issues through a multi-faceted lens, merging her studies in technology, history, and social justice.
Beyond the classroom, Sachi plays an active leadership role in the Honors College. She serves as the Mentor Coordinator for the Pathmakers Leadership Team, overseeing the Honors Pathmakers Mentorship Program. Sachi states,"The program helps new students feel like they belong, and it provides more experienceded students with the chance to grow as leaders." Sachi is passionate about fostering an inclusive and community-driven environment within Honors and believes that mentors play a crucial role in making the Honors community feel more connected.
Sachi is also involved in cutting-edge research in the Moses Biological Computation Laboratory, contributing to a project focused on robotic cooperative transport and bio-inspired algorithms inspired by ant foraging. In addition, she received the prestigious Diane and Gordon Myers Funding for Engineering Students through the Honors College, which has enabled her to pursue independent research in human-centered artificial intelligence. Sachi is investigating how feminist principles can be integrated into technological design, blending her interests in both technology and social equity.
Outside of academics and research, Sachi is a dedicated musician. She plays oboe in the UNM Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, and Canyon Winds trio. She is currently preparing for her senior recital, which will take place on April 26th. As President of the Gamma Iota chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, a national honorary fraternity supporting the university’s band program, Sachi is also preparing to attend the Southwest District Convention in Oklahoma, where she will fulfill her role as Chair of the District Nominations Committee.
Sachi’s commitment to community service extends beyond the classroom and the music hall. She also participated in the Write to Roam: Scotland as Text program during the summer of 2024, where she enhanced her creativity by speaking with Scottish authors, participating in workshops, and documenting her experiences through writing and photography. She has shared her work with several student publications on campus, including Scribendi, and encourages her peers to explore such enriching opportunities.
Renee Faubion, states, “Sachi is a gifted student. I have had her in two very different classes, and she excels at everything! She has a creative, rigorous mind, and she has been a wonderful leader in Honors. Her willingness to help other students is remarkable.”
Sachi Barnaby is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary learning, leadership, and creativity. Whether in the classroom, through her research, or in her musical and community involvement, she is making a lasting impact on the University of New Mexico and beyond.
