In 2023-2024, UNM Honors will recognize its 10th anniversary of becoming one of the largest honors colleges in the nation. While we were founded in 1957 as an honors program, the UNM Faculty Senate and Board of Regent approved us in 2012 to become a degree-granting college. In Fall 2013, our first cohort of students entered our newly restructured Honors College (details about our history may be found here). Thus, in 2023-2024, we invite our alums to help us celebrate our accomplishments and evolution as a college over these last 10 years. Learn more about the Honors College.

Events

  • September 12, 2023, from 11:00pm-12:15pm: Discovery Series Virtual Lecture

    In the fall and spring semesters, Honors College Discovery Series events foster opportunities for honors students to learn and join together as a community. Discovery Series events model the core values of honors: inquiry, active learning, participation, engaged listening, and community building, and thus vary in form from lectures to workshops. Re-live the honors experience by dropping into a virtual lecture by Kate Bingaman-Burt about the power of drawing daily and keeping records of her purchasing habits to explore the intersection of art and capitalism. This virtual talk will be available on Zoom here.

  • September 15, 2023, at 5:30 pm: Opening Celebration Lecture and Walking Tour

    Join us for an exciting lecture in the Honors Forum, discussing how UNM has chosen to memorialize important moments in a series of murals across campus. The Honors College’s own Dr. Troy R. Lovata (Anthropology, with a concentration in Archaeology, from the University of Texas (Ph.D. and M.A.) and Colorado State University (B.A.) will lead us on a walking tour of some of the campus’ most interesting, exciting, and memorable murals. Stay after the tour for a reception and fill out our survey about what you think the Honors College 10th Anniversary Mural should look like!

  • October 17-20: Homecoming

    The Discovery Lecture Series teams up with the Anniversary committee to bring Honors Alumnus Zach Hively, founder of Casa Urraca Press, to talk about his journey from honors student to publisher of some of New Mexico’s best and brightest writers. Free and open to the public. Tuesday, October 17, from 12:00 to 1:15 pm, in the Honors Forum.

    The Honors Alumni Chapter invites you to celebrate our community with an all-welcome homecoming happy hour event. We will honor our Distinguished Alumni Award winner and celebrate Scribendi at the students’ annual silent auction. Friday, October 20, from 5:00-8:00 pm, in the Honors Forum.

  • November 3, 2023 from 4:30pm-7:00 pm

    Join us for a happy hour at Canteen Brewhouse at 2381 Aztec NE. Pop in any time between 4:30-7:00 to raise a pint or glass, or simply enjoy catching up with the Honors Community. 

  • December 1, 2023, at 5:00 pm: Hanging of the Greens

    Hanging of the Greens is UNM’s oldest student tradition and is one of the largest farolito displays in the area, consisting of 13,000 farolitos across campus. Meet at the Honors College for festivities before the main event starts. We will walk to the UNM Bookstore together for the main event.

  • January 26, 2024 from 4:30pm-7:00 pm

    Join us for a happy hour at Craft Republic, 4301 The Lane at 25 NE, 87109 (It's off Jefferson, 1/4 mile west of I-25 and 1/4 mile NE of Century Rio Theater). Pop in any time between 4:30-7:00 to raise a pint or glass, or simply enjoy catching up with the Honors Community. 

  • March 2, 2024: Honors Author Fair from 1pm-5pm

    Join us in celebrating writers who are connected to our Honors community! Participate in workshops led by Betsy James, Amaris Ketcham, and Jona Kottler, explore a pop up book fair of books and stories written by Honors faculty, students,alumni, and staff. Light refreshments will be served during author readings in the Forum.

  • April 5 and 6, 2024: 10th Anniversary Mural Painting Days from 12pm-3pm

    Come and contribute to the Honors mural (no painting experience required) by painting a section in the Flex Lab.

  • April 27, 2024: 10th Anniversary Mural Dedication and Reception at 3pm

    Join us for the dedication of our commemorative 10th anniversary mural, hear the story behind the mural, meet the students behind the design, and join us for a dessert reception after the dedication ceremony.

Where to park for the 10th Anniversary Events

The Honors College is located in Building 76 (Anderson East) between Hokona Hall and McKinnon Center for Management (MCM) on Main Campus. You will find pay station parking in the Yale parking structure located in the corner of Lomas and Yale.
