Myrriah Gómez has been named as the director of the Southwest Hispanic Research Institute after serving as interim director since last fall. 

Gómez, an associate professor in the Honors College at UNM, is already planning SHRI’s first Research Fiesta for the fall semester.

“I am excited for SHRI to host our inaugural Research Fiesta this fall. SHRI researchers will be able to share their work with the UNM community and our community partners,” she said.

“This will be an open invitation for community organizations and individuals looking to partner with UNM faculty on projects to meet some of our incredible faculty.” 

Gómez, an associate professor in Honors College, is the author of Nuclear Nuevo México: Colonialism and the Effects of the Nuclear Industrial Complex on Nuevomexicanos (2022), which was awarded a Southwest Book Award and an International Latino Book Award. Her research interests include Chicanx Literature; Indigenous Literature; Chicanx Studies; New Mexico Critical Regional Studies; and Nuclear Cultural Studies. She directs the Conexiones-Spain study abroad program in Cáceres, Spain, and serves as faculty coordinator for the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program at UNM.
