Brain Fuel
The idea for the Brain Fuel Free Snack Bar arose from studies assessing the prevalence of food insecurity in our students. In 2022, a study (unpublished) conducted by Honors students found about 25% of students said they ran out of food in the last 30 days and they “didn’t have enough money to buy more.” One Honors student shared that they fainted in class because of hunger, and others said that studying was difficult when hungry. A 2023 study of basic needs insecurity in colleges and universities in New Mexico, led by Honors faculty Dr. Sarita Cargas, revealed a prevalence of 58% food insecurity among students. The majority had “very low food security” which is the most severe level of food insecurity according to the Basic Needs report found here.
Faculty in the Honors College decided that we could at least provide snacks to ensure Honors students were not hungry during class. As a result, Brain Fuel was created thanks to the leadership of Dr. Leslie Donovan. In addition to food, Brain Fuel occasionally provides hygiene products, school supplies, and clothing, all aimed at supporting individuals who may be facing financial hardship or food insecurity. Brain Fuel gives students the chance to fuel themselves to get through class and their day, allowing them more space of mind to focus on their academics—completely free of charge.
Brain Fuel is managed by Roadrunners, Honors student employees; anyone interested in donating can directly drop off supplies to the Roadrunners at the front desk or order through our Amazon wish list found here. Your contribution literally helps feed student success!
