Course Description
This workshop invites students to explore the art of comics in a fun, low- pressure environment. Each week, students will engage in playful drawing exercises, collaborate with peers, and create short comics inspired by prompts, games, and activities. No prior drawing or comics experience is required—just an openness to creativity. Students will leave with a small portfolio of first-draft comics and the confidence to continue creating. Please note that this is a generative process and course, so we will be less interested in revising and perfecting work.Texts
While there are no assigned texts for this course, you will need to bring your sketchbook and preferred drawing materials to each class session.About the Instructor(s):
Amaris Ketcham
Amaris Feland Ketcham writes and edits Autobiographix, which is about contemporary nonfiction comics. Each month she interviews comics creators about their practice. She has presented on comics at national and international conferences. Her graphic memoir, Unfiltered: A Cancer Year Diary, was published in 2023. As an artist-in- medicine, Amaris facilitates creative encounters with patients and family members in the UNM medical system. She also teaches Graphic Memoir, Scribendi, Write to Roam in Scotland, and Zines and Handmade Books.
