As part of the Honors College Discovery Series, Honors Professor Tomasz Falkowski will give a talk related to our Curiosity motto, discussing how indigenous peoples across Mesoamerica have sustainably managed diverse and complex agroecosystems for millennia. Drawing on a decade of collaborative research with Maya farmers in Chiapas, Mexico, this project examines how these traditional systems—described as “one of the most successful human inventions ever created”—are adapting to the socioecological pressures of the 21st century, including climate change, economic challenges, and demographic change.
