Rethinking traditional timelines can empower students to succeed.
About Audrey:
Minor: Chemistry + Biology
Honors Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts Certificate
From the moment Audrey Lee stepped onto the University of New Mexico campus, she knew that involvement meant more than just attending events; it was about finding her voice and using it to uplift those around her. Her journey began humbly as the ASUNM Senate Clerk, where she observed the intricate workings of university policies and systems. “It wasn’t just the resolutions we passed—it was the relationships, the conversations, the countless moments where listening became more valuable than speaking,” she reflects. This foundation paved the way for her current role as the ASUNM Director of Web Design in the Office of Communications, where she shapes how student government communicates its vision to the campus community.
Audrey’s leadership extends beyond student government. Each fall, she takes on the role of assistant varsity football coach, guiding young athletes both on and off the field. Coaching has taught her a valuable lesson: every student—and every player—requires a unique approach. “The power of communication lies in understanding those around you and building lasting connections,” she emphasizes.
Academically, Audrey’s path took an unexpected turn when she enrolled in the Honors College’s Legacy of Ancient Technology. This course invited her to embrace uncertainty and approach questions without the pressure of immediate answers, allowing her to find a new home for her curiosity in the Greenberg Research Group, led by Professor Jake Greenberg and housed in University College. Here, she leads efforts to investigate UNM’s incomplete grade pathway in First-Year Learning Math classes—a policy aimed at supporting students by giving them the necessary time to master fundamental skills. “Rethinking traditional timelines can empower students to succeed,” she asserts, highlighting a nearly 5% increase in pass rates as proof of this impact.
Her commitment to education extends to advocating for the expansion of this program, driven by the belief that education should meet students where they are. For her and her research partner, this dedication was recognized with the 2024 Faculty Mentored Research Award, solidifying her passion for meaningful change through collaboration and inquiry.
Inspired by New Mexico’s unique ecosystem, Audrey’s research interests have expanded to explore Salsola tragus, the tumbleweed. Often dismissed as a nuisance, this plant contains bioactive compounds with potential health benefits. Through her work, she aims to connect organic chemistry with New Mexico’s native flora, reshaping how science is taught while honoring cultural significance.
Beyond academia, Audrey actively serves her community. As a peer advisor for the Undergraduate Research, Arts, and Design (URAD) Network, she guides fellow students in their research journeys. Additionally, her role as a Pathmaker in the Honors College allows her to mentor first-year students, fostering a supportive community that reflects her own experience. “It’s a full-circle moment,” she shares, emphasizing the importance of community in personal growth.
Audrey’s commitment to service is further exemplified by her position on the Board of Directors for Hero Path Palliative Care, a nonprofit dedicated to serving medically complex children. This role has strengthened her resolve to pursue a future in medicine or medical research, merging compassion with scientific inquiry—a vision she never anticipated when she first arrived at UNM.
Recognized as the Honors College 2024 Outstanding Freshman of the Year, Audrey understands that her journey is just beginning. Whether on the football field, in the lab, or within the community, her goals remain clear: to lead with purpose, learn with curiosity, and serve with empathy. From organizing events like the Honors Ice Cream Social to fostering connections at casual gatherings, Audrey is committed to creating an inclusive and vibrant Honors College community. As she continues to shape her path, she embodies the spirit of engagement, connection, and growth that defines her university experience.
