Staff Spotlight: Joseph Varela Crafting Memorable Moments at the Honors College
March 11, 2025 - Anna Abeyta
Meet Joseph Varela, an integral part of the UNM Honors College team! Joseph is the behind-the-scenes organizer who helps ensure that events in the Forum run smoothly and efficiently. From managing event logistics to running the Honors College website, Joseph's diverse responsibilities keep everything running like clockwork. When he's not in the office, the whole team looks to him for support—his presence is felt in every corner of the Honors College.
A first-generation college graduate, Joseph has called Albuquerque home his entire life. He earned his BA in Economics and Political Science from UNM and knew that he wanted to give back to his community in a meaningful way. After working at large corporations, Joseph decided to make a change and find a role that aligned more closely with his values. He wanted to work somewhere that prioritized impact over profit, which led him to the Honors College.
Joseph finds great fulfillment in his role at the Honors College, especially when it comes to the direct impact he has on students. Although he may not always be working directly with students, the work he does behind the scenes contributes significantly to their experience. As he puts it, "Many of the things we do behind the scenes make a big impact on students and our community."
One of Joseph’s most cherished memories at the Honors College is during the Honors Orientation. "We have paletas, shirts, and other things to give out to students before they start at UNM," he says. "I love to see how excited students and families are to be here and to learn about the Honors College." It’s moments like these that remind Joseph of the tangible difference his work makes in students' lives.
Supervisor Lorena Rodriguez Vazquez states, “Joseph is the staff member that every supervisor would love to have on their team! His dedication to work and positive attitude make him unique and valuable to the UNM Honors College.” We’re lucky to have Joseph on our team, and we can’t wait to see the continued impact he’ll make at the Honors College!
