Morales becomes UNM’s first Rhodes Scholarship recipient since 2001

Abrianna Morales, a 2023 graduate from the University of New Mexico (UNM), has been awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, joining 32 recipients from the U.S. for 2025. The scholarship provides full funding for graduate study at the University of Oxford, one of the world’s top academic institutions.

Morales, who graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Psychology and Criminology, has shown a strong commitment to victim advocacy and policy reform. She founded the Sexual Assault Youth Support Network and works as a program manager with the National Organization for Victim Advocacy (NOVA), where she leads a nationwide pilot program for victim advocacy training.

At Oxford, Morales will pursue a master’s in Political Thought, focusing on the intersection of identity development and youth service engagement. She expressed excitement about joining a global community of scholars and changemakers.

Her selection marks UNM's first Rhodes Scholar since 2001, reflecting the university's emphasis on academic excellence and leadership. Mentors and faculty members, including Dr. Kiyoko Simmons and Professor Lisa Broidy, praised her dedication to both intellectual pursuits and social impact. Morales' achievement highlights the talent and potential of students at UNM and serves as an inspiration to the wider community.
